June 2 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump appointed federal housing regulator Bill Pulte as acting director of national \u200bintelligence on Tuesday, elevating a political loyalist without national \u200csecurity experience to lead the country\u2019s sprawling intelligence community.<\/div>\n
In a social media post, Trump said Pulte, 38, would remain \u200bdirector of Federal Housing Finance Agency and the chair of \u200bfederally supported mortgage-backers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.<\/div>\n
“William \u2060has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters \u200bin America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, \u200band over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae\/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago,” Trump \u200bwrote on his Truth Social platform.<\/div>\n
Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s \u200bfirst director of national intelligence, announced plans to leave the post \u200cin \u2060May. Reuters reported she was forced from the role over friction with the White House. Gabbard said she resigned due to her husband’s recent cancer diagnosis.<\/div>\n
The U.S. \u200bintelligence community \u200bis comprised \u2060of 18 agencies, including the CIA and National Security Agency, tasked with gathering data \u200band information security threats both domestically and \u200bglobally. \u2060The department has taken on increased importance in recent months due to Trump’s war on Iran, recent attempted \u2060attacks \u200bon the president and federal \u200bofficials, and a raft of brewing military engagements in South America.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
