The report also revealed how Nobitex continued operating even after the government-imposed \u200binternet shutdown, processing millions of dollars of transactions.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhile Iran\u2019s economy is in free fall, the regime has \u200bchosen to co-opt digital asset technologies for its own corrupt agenda, including evading sanctions and transferring wealth out of the country,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.<svg><\/svg><span>, opens new tab<\/span><\/div>\n<div>The Reuters investigation showed how Nobitex is controlled by two brothers from one \u200bof Iran\u2019s most powerful families, with close ties to the new supreme leader. The two are \u200bmembers of the Kharrazi family, one of the most influential dynasties in the Islamic Republic. Corporate records show that when \u200cthe \u2060exchange started, the brothers were listed under a surname rarely used by members of the family.<\/div>\n<div>The U.S. Treasury announced Tuesday that the two brothers, Seyed Mohammad Ali Aghamir Mohammad Ali and Seyed Mohammad Aghamir Mohammad Ali, had also been individually sanctioned, along with the exchange\u2019s chief executive officer, Amir Hossein Rad.<\/div>\n<div>Nobitex had \u200bprovided \u201csignificant support\u201d to the \u200bIranian government and facilitated \u2060a \u201csignificant number\u201d of digital transactions linked to the IRGC and Iran\u2019s central bank, the U.S. Treasury said in the statement. \u201cFollowing the commencement of U.S. combat operations \u200bin Iran, Nobitex played a role in protecting and moving assets and funds \u200bout of \u2060Iran to shield regime wealth despite internet blackouts.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Nobitex could not be reached for comment on the sanctions, which were announced after normal business hours in Iran.<\/div>\n<div>In an emailed statement to Reuters in April, Nobitex said it \u2060had no \u200bdirect government connections and denied assisting the state. It said \u200bthat any illicit funds moving through Nobitex did so without management approval or awareness.
